Billboard Top 10 Albums (Week ending 10 Nov 09): Carrie 'Plays On'

Position: 1. Last Week: -.
Carrie Underwood – Play On
Sold: 317,695. Total Sold: 317,811.
Change: -. Weeks: 1.

Carrie Underwood’s third studio album “Play On” opened to the best sales week for a female artist in 2009 but suffered a steep drop from last release “Carnival Ride” which started with more than 527,000 copies. Lead single “Cowboy Casanova” peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Position: 2. Last Week: 1.
Michael Jackson’s This Is It - Soundtrack
Sold: 195,666. Total Sold: 569,471.
Change: -48%. Weeks: 2.

Michael Jackson continues to draw strong attention to his material as the soundtrack to his concert musical film falls less than half from last week. The live set is well on its way to being certified platinum by year’s end.

Position: 3. Last Week: -.
Andrea Bocelli – My Christmas
Sold: 148,527. Total Sold: 148,583.
Change: -. Weeks: 1.

Legendary opera singer Andrea Bocelli posts his best sales week since 2001 and his highest position on the charts since 2006’s “Amore”.

Position: 4. Last Week: -.
Glee Cast – Glee: The Music Volume 1
Sold: 113,243. Total Sold: 113,281.
Change: -. Weeks: 1.

The “Glee” hit machine brings its magic to the album charts as the freshman television series finally releases a parent record that houses all those single hits. It should remain a favourite through Christmas but will find it difficult to emulate the success of the “High School Musical” series.

Position: 5. Last Week: -.
Various – NOW 32
Sold: 101,606. Total Sold: 101,699.
Change: -. Weeks: 1.

The unstoppable “Now” series keeps chugging in its 32nd installment, bringing together some of the biggest current hits all on one CD. Units have declined with the advent of digital downloads but it still has respectable sales.

Position: 6. Last Week: 3.
Taylor Swift - Fearless
Sold: 69,929. Total Sold: 4,210,855.
Change: -36%. Weeks: 52.

Taylor Swift maintains her dominance as the poster child of music industry super success as her sophomore record “Fearless” with the help of a “Platinum Edition” re-release spends exactly one year on the Billboard 200, an amazing feat, especially considering how many weeks it has been among the best selling of the week – 43 weeks in the top ten.

Position: 7. Last Week: -.
Weezer - Raditude
Sold: 66,156. Total Sold: 66,447.
Change: -. Weeks: 1.

Weezer follows up the “Red Album” or the self-titled “Weezer” with “Raditude” to moderate success. While the group has seen decreasing sales like many artists this decade, the failure to produce a solid hit this year hurt awareness and sales.

Position: 8. Last Week: 7.
Michael Buble – Crazy Love
Sold: 59,392. Total Sold: 567,705.
Change: -17%. Weeks: 5.

Buble’s former number one hit shows consistent sales power; down 17% to remain in good stead ahead of the coming Christmas boom. It should be certified Gold shortly.

Position: 9. Last Week: 6.
Sting – If On A Winter’s Night
Sold: 59,087. Total Sold: 138,691.
Change: -26%. Weeks: 2.

Sting’s holiday-themed record holds on after a somewhat disappointing opening last week. The time of year and material will help the set to do week in the coming weeks.

Position: 10. Last Week: 8.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon – Soundtrack
Sold: 52,337. Total Sold: 389,448.
Change: -24%. Weeks: 4.

With the upcoming release of the ultra-hyped “New Moon” film, the soundtrack should rebound to bigger sales on the chart and be a hot Christmas gift for young teenagers. It has lagged behind its predecessor a bit but other than it being released before the movie’s debut, the compilation has failed to produce a single as liked as Paramore’s “Decode”.
